About the rating

Why did I have a colonoscopy? It was time.

As is typical with this procedure, you must “cleanse” your system. You must not eat for 24 hours prior to the procedure and drink a powerful laxative. As you can imagine, it can be a bit uncomfortable.

I arrived at the doctor’s office two hours prior to the procedure. They checked me in and prepared me for the IV. Unfortunately, I was getting over a very bad cold and had not eaten for two days prior to this procedure. That, in combination with my acute fear of needles and lack of “good veins” made the prep work very difficult. After four attempts to get the needle in, I started to hyperventilate. At this time another nurse came over and was able to get my breathing back to normal and get the needle in on the first try. She had an incredible ability to calm a patient down. She was remarkable. As for the procedure, not a problem. I did not even remember it.

I stayed in the recovery unit for 30 minutes or so and went home with my wife.

My Advice

Follow the prep directions and don’t worry about the procedure. In my case the prep and preprocedure — laxative and IV) — was a lot worse than the actual procedure.
