My Experience

I had a routine screening/baseline mammogram. My doctor explained that I would have this procedure now, and then annually beginning at age 40.

I was referred by my doctor to an affiliated hospital and I scheduled an appointment. I was told not to wear any powders or dyes on the area near the breast or under my arms on the day of the mammogram.

I arrived and checked in. I then went to a changing room to put on a gown and I waited to be called. The screening was uncomfortable because of the way your breasts have to be positioned in the machine and from the pressure of the compression by the machine. However, it is not painful.

My Advice

It was my first mammogram, and very anxiety-provoking. But don’t be scared of the process. (I know that is easier said than done.) Also, ask questions along the way. This will definitely decrease the fear of the unknown.
