A Pap smear (also called a Pap test, Papanicolaou test, or cervical smear) is a screening test for changes in the cells of the cervix, the lower potion of the uterus that opens into the vagina. During the collection part of the test, a healthcare provider collects cells from the cervix using a special stick or brush. The cells are placed on a slide which then gets sent to a laboratory for examination for the presence of an infection, abnormal cells or cancer.
