Irradiation with radioactive iodine is a treatment used for an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or thyroid cancer. Radioactive iodine is generally given by mouth in capsule form. It enters the bloodstream and goes to the thyroid cells, which are then destroyed over time.
