The pain was so bad from my broken tooth that I called my dentist on Easter for a prescription. I was in excruciating pain with really bad headaches and sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Instead he offered to perform the root canal that morning.
This procedure was performed without prior scheduling so there was no real preparation.
I got to the dentist’s office and he immediately administered Novocaine. After about 10 minutes my mouth was completely numb and I was prepared for the procedure to begin. My doctor began drilling. He bore a hole straight down into the center of my tooth into the root cavity to expose all the inflamed root tissue and nerves.
Next, he used a series of small hook-like tools to pull the nerve tissue out of the root cavity. This took about 5 minutes or so.
Once my dentist was done removing any nerve tissue and inflamed root tissue, he had me rinse my mouth out. The next step was filling the bored out tooth with small cone shaped plugs which he cut to size. He fit these in the hole and prepared the filling.
The filling process was just like any other cavity. He prepared a paste/putty to fill the hole and plugged it up. He shaped the filling material using tools and checked my bite alignment.
All in all there was no pain whatsoever and only the slight inconvenience of having to go into the dentist. I felt much better afterwards and was able to enjoy my Easter.
My Advice
Don’t sweat it. People make root canals out to being this big deal and in the past maybe they were. With today’s techniques and medicines this procedure is a walk in the park. The Novocaine shot is really the only pain you will endure and if you are experiencing pain from the tooth already, this procedure is absolutely worth it.
