My Experience
I had a large lump on the left side of my thyroid. On the day of surgery, I went to the hospital desk and registered, and was taken back to the preop area. I brought a book as there is a time lapse between preop and surgery, and of course if there is a complication with a previous patient it will reflect on the schedule for the whole day.
The staff did all the hooking, wiring, attaching, etc. You just do the relaxing part. Then you wake up and its done. Okay, maybe you wake up a little sore and groggy, but the hospital staff was there at my first blink of an eye asking me if I wanted any pain reliever – which of course I did.
After the procedure, I enjoyed a few days of napping and reading. The only discomfort to speak of was swallowing. My two sisters and two of their kids came to my house the day I got home and drove me batty. Then the phone kept ringing. I just wanted to sleep, not entertain anyone. Finally, I shut off the phone, but was too kind to throw out the family.
My Advice
Bring a book to distract you as you wait to be taken into surgery. Tell family and friends to leave you alone the first day, unless, of course, you’re a person who wants the “touchy, feely, entertain me, take care of me” stuff. Also on the first day back, turn the ringer off on your phone and let voicemail pick up so you can get rest.
