My Experience

I wanted birth control and decided on a vasectomy.

At the initial visit, the doctor explained to me exactly what he was going to do, including drawing a little picture. He also wanted to make sure I didn’t want any more children. He told me to expect bruising for a few days after the procedure, and to plan to not exert myself for two or three days afterward.

The day of the procedure, the first thing I did at the doctor’s office was pay as my insurance did not cover this and the doctor’s office asked for payment upfront. The nurse then brought me to a room, had me partially undress and covered me up. Then the doctor came in and started. He gave me a local anesthetic that didn’t hurt. He talked to me during the procedure to see if I had any pain; all I felt was a little tugging in the area of my lower abdomen. He was finished in about 15 minutes.

The doctor gave me some instructions for post procedure and a prescription for antibiotics, and I walked out. I had severe bruising. The area was black and blue for two weeks. I had some soreness, and was uncomfortable just below my lower left abdomen area. The doctor had told me to expect this and it eventually went away completely. I was told to come back after 10 ejaculations to submit a semen sample.

My Advice

Expect bruising and some discomfort after the procedure and ask your doctor how to address this.
